Riverine Flood alert in effect until Monday

A Riverine Flood Alert #1 – Yellow Level is in now in effect for communities surrounding major and minor water courses in Trinidad.

The Met Office said the alert is expected to end at 12pm on Monday.

They noted that after this morning’s activity, rainfall accumulations have caused the major rivers levels across Trinidad to be near or above 80%, and smaller watercourses at critical levels.

Periods of rainfall, it said, will likely continue over the next 24-36 hours, which will result in further elevation of the river levels.

As a result, the Met Office said there is now a moderate risk to public safety, livelihood and property in communities surrounding these water-courses.

It said this would also impact persons who have already been affected by street and flash flooding.

Run-off will be slow at high tide, which will be at 5:31pm for today.

Citizens are urged to monitor weather conditions and river levels before venturing out and to avoid areas with flood waters.
