PM says Opposition “trying to play politics” and not interested in the abatement of crime

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says the Opposition does not want to see an abatement of serious criminal conduct.

Speaking at the first post Cabinet press conference for the year this afternoon, at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s, Rowley chastised the Opposition’s call to implement a State of Emergency (SoE) as a measure to deal with the current increase in criminal activities.

He accused the opposition of not being serious about wanting to hold proposed joint crime talks- despite the fact that the government had previously agreed to meet with them.

The PM said the UNC was “trying to play politics” with their suggestion, as he noted that the SoE implemented by the People’s Partnership government in 2011 was seen as an ‘abject failure’ of their approach in fighting crime.

He assured that the government has a mandate and responsibility to mobilise state resources to deal with criminal conduct, and that it must stay within the remit of the law.

He said his administration has done and will continue to do all that is necessary to fight crime.
