PM cancels contract for construction of 5,000 new apartments

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has stopped the construction of 5,000 new apartments at designated sites within Trinidad.

Dr. Rowley has decided to cancel the contract since “it did not meet Cabinet’s acceptance and approval, both structurally and legally” after a review. The agreement was made between the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and China Gezhouba Group International Engineering Co Ltd (CGGC), a Chinese construction and engineering company. During the post-cabinet media briefing yesterday, Dr. Rowley said that HDC has been advised to request new tenders from interested parties for the construction of the units.

The cancellation of the contract comes after just three months- the agreement was signed between the two parties in May of this year.
