Persad-Bissessar requests international observers for LGE

Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said her party does not trust the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) and as such, has written to the Prime Minister, requesting international election observers for the upcoming Local Government Election.

Speaking at UNC’s Monday Night Report at its Chaguanas headquarters, Persad-Bissessar said Dr Keith Rowley has to call the election on or before August 18. However, she expects the announcement of an election date in July.

“Given there is a three-month window of opportunity, I have taken the liberty of writing to the Prime Minister to request or to call upon him to bring in international election observers for the elections. We do not trust you. We have seen all the irregularities over the years,” Persad-Bissessar said.

The bill to validate the work of councillors and aldermen over the last six months heads to the Senate today.

The UNC will begin screening candidates for the elections at its headquarters on Thursday.
