Mayaro home firebombed; 61-year-old male relative held

A 61-year-old man has been detained after he allegedly firebombed the home of his relatives in Mayaro on Monday.

Anisha Bahadoor, 34, along with her siblings, Anusha, 38, and Amit, 34, and her parents Peter, 71, and Sharon of Old Mafeking Road, Mafeking Village went to sleep around 10 pm. Three children ages nine, six and seven months old, were also asleep.

Around 2:30 am, Bahadoor heard cracking sounds and saw smoke and fire. It is alleged that a relative who lives in the area smashed her bedroom window and threw a liquid on her. He then threw a Molotov cocktail through the window and she caught on fire.

Bahadoor, her family and the suspect were taken to the Mayaro Health Facility. But, Bahadoor was transferred to the Sangre Grande Hospital and then to the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex in Mount Hope where she was warded. She is said to be in a stable condition.

Her family and the 61-year-old were examined, treated and discharged from the health facility.

The 61-year-old suspect was arrested and faces several charges including attempted murder and arson.

The house and its contents valued at $500,000 were completely destroyed.
