Maharaj challenges Persad-Bissessar and Bharath to a national debate

Devant Maharaj has issued a debate challenge to UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and his fellow challenger for the leadership post, Vasant Bharath.

Speaking to Power 102 this morning, Maharaj said that he issued the challenge “Given the fact that this internal election is such an important one and given that Kamla Persad-Bissessar has lost 11 consecutive elections and come in second one too many times, especially in the face of an unpopular PNM government.”

He said that in the context of a Covid crisis, where they cannot have the kinds of meetings that is normally associated with an internal election, a debate will give the electorate the opportunity to find out the different positions of the candidates.

Maharaj said that “A national debate among the candidates going up for the election would be helpful and instructive in assisting the UNC membership with making up their minds.”

However, when asked if he felt that the challenge would be accepted.

Maharaj said “I am predicting that Persad-Bissessar would be a coward and not accept this challenge, because it appears that they intend to win the election by means which are highly suspicious.”

He said he has written to the chairman of the party, regarding the election transparency and the process regarding the membership with the committe and is yet to receive a response.

He said he hopes that public pressure will be placed on them to get some sort of movement.
