Justice Amrika Tiwari-Reddy Described As Trail-Blazer And Mentor For Women In Various Aspects Of Public Service

A trail-blazer and mentor for women in various aspects of public service.

This is how the judiciary describes Madam Justice Amrika Tiwari-Reddy, CM, retired High Court Judge of Trinidad and Tobago, who was laid to rest earlier today.

Before pursuing the path to legal education,  Justice Tiwari-Reddy served as the very first Principal of the Lakshmi Girls College from 1963 to 1965.

She was admitted to the Bar in England in 1968 and then in Trinidad and Tobago the following year.

Entering into public office, Justice Tiwari-Reddy served as a government senator from January 1987 to November 1991.

During this period, she acted as Attorney General several times, becoming the first woman to serve in that office in Trinidad and Tobago.

Justice Tiwari-Reddy also practiced at the Canadian Bar before being appointed Puisne Judge in 1999.

Among her many other contributions to public service after her retirement from the Bench in 1999,  Justice Tiwari-Reddy served as one of the first Commissioners of the Trinidad and Tobago Fair Trading Commission.

In 2012, Justice Tiwary-Reddy received the nation’s second highest award, the Chaconia Medal GOLD, in recognition of her years of distinguished service to Trinidad and Tobago in the sphere of Law.
