Hinds’ porn claim “ridiculous” says criminal defence attorney

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds is being criticized for pouring doubt on whether poverty or unemployment affects the crime rate but asserting that violent movies and pornography are partly to blame.

Hinds made the comments while was speaking last Friday at a business forum jointly hosted by the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers and the Trade and Development Unit of The University of the West Indies.

He claimed that “the jury is out” on crime being linked to poverty and unemployment and instead offered the theory that graphic violence and obscenities in movies along with pornography was partly to blame.

However, attorney at law, Fareed Ali criticized Hinds for what he described as a ridiculous comment and called on the minister to provide empirical evidence to support his claims

The criminal defence attorney claimed that by Minster Hinds’ logic, Carnival is also to blame for the crime rate in T&T.
