Couva and Cunupia residents stage fiery protests | WATCH

Residents of Rivulet Road in Couva and Chin Chin Road in Cunupia staged simultaneous fiery protests this morning, blocking the roads with burning debris over a barrage of issues affecting them.

In Chin Chin Road, Cunupia, the road was blocked with burning debris by residents of Kernahan Trace, who are upset with a lack of water in their community.

The residents say they have been without a steady supply of water for the past seven years.

The protest began from as early as 5.30 am, with residents setting the debris alight near Griffith Trace and Kernahan Trace off the Chin Chin Main Road.

Up to 7 am, the roads were still blocked.

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) said then that the issue was as a result of the harsh dry season and reduced water production at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant.

At Rivulet Road, residents raised concerns about a piece of land in the area.

Chairman of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation Ryan Rampersad, says the empty land was being used by the residents for years to facilitate community activities.

Recently, a container was dropped and work began to erect a fence around the property.

The work is being done by a company claiming to own the land, however the residents say no documents have been provided to verify this.

He adds that if the company does in fact own the land, they will have all legal rights to use it as they deem fit.
