Coast Guard confirms issues with one of its interceptors

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) said it is aware of a video circulating on social media showing a beached interceptor of the TTCG’s fleet.

They said via a release that while conducting maritime operations the interceptor experienced a malfunctioning bilge pump causing it to begin taking in water.

The vessel was safely escorted to the TTCG’s Headquarters, Staubles Bay, where attempts were made to get the bilge pump working, which proved futile. Subsequently, the vessel’s crew and escort attempted to tow the boat to our nearest drydocking point.

While making way the vessel began taking in water and efforts to bail the rapid ingress of water failed causing it to be submerged. The interceptor has since been safely recovered and drydocked awaiting an assessment to determine damages.

Once this process is completed and identified issues rectified, the vessel will return to active service.

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard said it remains committed to providing border security and search and rescue services in order to maintain the safety and security of Trinidad and Tobago through the conduct of maritime security patrols within our area of operations.
