10 people homeless after fire guts Barrackpore house

Ten people have been left homeless, after fire completely gutted their home in Barrackpore.

Hema Mohammed said she was at their Tin Pan Alley home around 7 pm Saturday when she started to smell something burning.

She along with another relative decided to check and found one of the bedroom’s on fire.

The flames quickly spread to other parts of the four-bedroom wooden and concrete house.

Tricia Harrilal, an occupant of the house, said “It was an old house, so the fire spread fast. It started in my mother-in-law’s bedroom which was locked. She had just left to go a wake. We tried putting out the fire using buckets of water. Any help we get, we would be grateful.”

The family lost everything in the blaze, even two of their pet dogs, a turtle, parrot and about 60 tilapia fishes.

Joanne Chatoor, another relative said she believed the fire was maliciously set, as the family had received threats two months ago in relation to a dispute over an engine, involving her brother and a man.
