A fire in Freeport on Wednesday night has claimed the life of a 58-year-old man.
Dhanpaul Mahabir died while trying to extinguish a fire at his Siewdass Road home.
Neighbors heard a cracking noise at around 8.15 pm and on checking saw the home of Mahabir on fire.
They told police that Mahabir tried to extinguish the blaze but was not successful.
He was then seen going into the building.
One of Mahabir’s relatives who lived near the property pulled him from the burning house as he was slipping in and out of consciousness.
Fire officers were called in and are continuing enquiries.
