UNC’s Cumuto/Tamana Councilor resigns over misbehaviour charges

Anil Maharaj, the UNC councillor for Cumuto/Tamana has resigned.

This comes after Maharaj was charged with misbehaviour in public office last Thursday and follows a call yesterday by the PNM and Sangre Grande Regional Corporation for him to demit office.

Maharaj was arrested last week after police officers investigated a report that between January 1 and June 30, 2021, Maharaj allegedly demanded the sum of $15,000 from a contractor at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.

In a statement this morning, the party wrote: “Mr Anil Maharaj, Councillor for the Electoral District of Cumuto/Tamana, has announced to the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation at its monthly Finance Meeting that he has tendered his resignation as the Chairman of the Finance, Planning and Allocation of Resources Committee with immediate effect in light of the recent allegations made against him,” the statement said.

The party said his resignation was an attempt to reserve the public confidence in the commitee and that Maharaj intended to, “robustly defend these allegations and vindicate his name and reputation.”
