UNC says no LGE candidate of theirs arrested

The United National Congress has denied reports that one of their candidates for the local government election was arrested.

In a statement on Sunday, the party said: “No UNC local government election candidate has been arrested, early this morning or at any time.”

The response follows reports on social media that a UNC councillor in East Trinidad was arrested for having a firearm in his possession without being the holder of a Firearms Users Licence (FUL).

The report claimed that Zambo Swift, the nominee to contest the Auzonville/Tunapuna electoral district, was allegedly held with an illegal firearm, while at a bar during the early hours on Sunday.

However, in a media release, the UNC refuted the report and asked citizens “please disregard all disinformation sources alleging otherwise.”

Ina later release, the UNC reminded the public that the party takes no responsibility for any social media posts on other sites.

The UNC said it has completed screening and will announce candidates in the upcoming week.

They also said no candidates have been announced for the TPRC by the UNC and urged caution when viewing sites which purport to be UNC affiliated.
