TTUTA calls on schools to ensure students are hydrated as intense heat continues

TTUTA Head Martin Lum Kin says the Association is concerned with the effects of the intense heat presently being experienced in T&T on students and teaching staff.

Today marked the beginning of the new school term for thousands of students throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

On August 30 the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) disclosed that citizens were burning more electricity to cool off during this period of sweltering heat.

In a news release the Commission stated that it recorded its highest-ever consumer electricity demand of 1410 megawatts (MW) on Monday August 28, 2023.

The Meteorological Office has said that high temperatures would continue throughout September and relief could only be felt from October.

News Power reached out to the Minister of Education on what measures were provided for students and teaching staff given the intense heat especially at schools where there are no air conditioning systems, however we are yet to get a response.

Lum Kin told our newsroom this morning that TTUTA too is concerned with the heat and while they are unaware of any measures put in place by the Ministry it hopes individual schools are doing their part by ensuring proper hydration of students.
