Trade Union Movement Expresses Fear And Objection To The Government’s Decision To Extend The State Of Emergency.

Trinidad and Tobago’s entire trade union movement is expressing concerns, fear and objection to the Government’s decision to extend the State of Emergency for another three months.

The three major trade unions claim that in the absence of any empirical data to justify the success of the first SOE, they find it repulsive for the Government to unleash what they describe as another period of severe restrictions on normal economic and civil activity.

They claim that this will, in a fundamental way, affect the freedom, rights and civil liberties of the citizens of this country, on the eve of our Independence.

In media release Monday afternoon, the trade unions said this SOE has decimated many thousands of small and medium sized businesses and obliterated employment opportunities for thousands of citizens.

The trade unions are also claiming it has created an increased cadre of ‘working poor’ as a result of obscene and unchecked price increases in the face of wage freezes or reduction and massive joblessness.
