The UNC says Amendments to larceny laws needed to deal with new extortion racket

The Business community is being told not to be silent on the matter of extortion from nefarious characters.

MP and Shadow Minister of National Security Roodal Moonilal says that the practice of demanding ‘security money’ from businesses is a very serious problem that must be addressed.

During a press conference this morning Moonilal said that the businesses must stand up and speak out so that it can be dealt with.

He said laws governing such activities need to be reviewed as soon as possible.

This follows the murder of two businessmen on Sunday.

Fifty-four-year-old Kris Ramsaran was shot 16 times and his friend , Rishi Joseph, 44, a business owner, was also shot and killed as the two arrived at Joseph’s St Helena home around 4.30 p.m.

A close male relative dismissed the claim that he was targeted by a gang suspected of extorting business owners in Piarco and St Helena.

He told Guardian media that Joseph owned a few apartments connected to his home and also bought and sold used vehicles.

Joseph’s relative suggested that Ramsaran was the gunmen’s intended target, based on the fact that he was shot 16 times while Joseph only sustained one gunshot wound.
