The Opposition Is Being Urged To Support The Cannabis Control Bill

The Opposition support is being called for with respect to the Cannabis Control Bill 2020.

It comes from Minister in the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, Renuka Sagramsingh Sookal.

She made the appeal while contributing to the bill in the Senate Tuesday afternoon.

Even with stringent measures being put in place by government to decriminalise cannabis in Trinidad and Tobago, Mrs Sagramsingh Sookal cited the developments which can arise with the creation of a black market cannabis trade, pointing to what is taking place in Canada and other countries in this regard.

Mrs Sagramsingh Sookal at the end of her contribution urged the Opposition to rally behind the bill adding it will benefit citizens.

Meanwhile, Independent Senator, Dr Varma Deyalsingh, leading off his input on the bill said it brought him some distress as a few years ago as he was totally against the use of marijuana because in his profession he has seen what it does to young persons.

Dr Deyalsingh also revealed some of the findings of the Caricom Regional Commission in 2014 which looked at the marijuana issue and highlighted the importance of safe guarding our future through various means.
