SDMS: No change to our school rules despite Edu. Min. National School Hair Code

Denominational Schools will not be making any adjustments to its school rules for the new term despite Education Ministry’s the new hair code for schools.

This is according to the General Secretary of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha Vijay Maharaj.

Dreadlocks, twists, plaits, afros and cornrows are now acceptable hairstyles in schools according to the Ministry of Education.

These are among broad guidelines the Ministry of Education has included in a National School Hair Code which was developed after a meeting with education stakeholders yesterday.

The Code can be used by principals to develop their individual school hair rules.

Speaking with News Power Now this morning Maharaj said that so far there are no intentions by the Denominational Board to embrace the new guidelines.

He said the meeting with the Ministry of Education only took place yesterday and yet the Ministry released guidelines today.

He said he felt the Ministry was being disingenuous in saying that it consulted with stakeholders before the information was made public.

He disclosed that the Denominational Boards will have a discussion within the forthcoming week on the matter.

The Code can be used by principals to develop their individual school hair rules.

However he said there are already rules governing dress code at the Denominational schools and there is no reason to change.

Mr Maharaj also stated that change to the dress code now will only lead to problems in the future.
