Public Utilities Minister says WASA not to blame for HDC water issues

Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales says the issue of a lack of water in HDC settlements is not necessarily a WASA issue.

Speaking on Power 102 Digital’s Power Breakfast Show, he said HDC is investing in housing settlements without ensuring there is sufficient system maintenance plans in place for the residents.

He noted that there are situations where persons in HDC apartments are not receiving water and as a result blame WASA.

However he said investigations have revealed that while water may be reaching an HDC compound, the issue is HDC or the residents’ failure to maintain or upgrade the pumps or water infrastructure on the compound.

He also called on citizens who receive HDC houses to treat their houses as an investment.

Minister Gonzales noted that it is important that owners do their part by ensuring the relevant management committees are in place and that residents pay the relevant housing fees to ensure that water and sewerage systems are maintained.
