This country’s public transport system will soon be adding 300 electric buses and a transport hub for commuters in central Trinidad.
Senator Richie Sookhai, the Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport, said the transport hub would assist in the traffic problem plaguing the borough.
He said initial data collected has indicated that productivity values have lost over $150 million annually because of traffic along the north and southbound lanes of the highway.
He said PTSC would be procuring 300 electric buses to service communities of which the first phase is expected to roll out by the end of this year.
Sookhai said once confidence is built up in the public transport system more people would be inclined to use it.
He added that while the UNC was in power they did little to solve the traffic problems in Chaguanas. He said $10 million was squandered by the UNC to construct a walkover in the vicinity of the Divali Nagar that is only used once a year. He said the UNC installed a round-a-bout at Rodney Road that created more traffic and blocked off several access arteries.
Sookhai said there are several road rehabilitation programmes that are scheduled to start soon. He said some of these roads include Endeavour Road, Caroni Savannah Road, the Caparo Valley/ Brasso Road and the Southern Main Road.
