Protesters outside Parliament as Electoral College get ready to vote for new President

With the Electoral College set to meet at 1:30pm today to decide on the next President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, a large crowd has gathered outside the parliament.

Reports are that these are citizens against the government’s decision to nominate Christine Kangaloo.
They were heard chanting “Rowley must go” and “No to Kangaroo.”

The United National Congress, who have nominated Senior Counsel Israel Khan, regard Kangaloo as unsuitable and have questioned her political affiliations.

The vote is via a secret ballot and government will have 39 votes, namely 23 from the House and 16 from the Senate, including two presiding officers, while the Opposition will have 25 votes comprised of 19 from the House and six from the Senate, while the Independent Senators have nine votes.
