The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service has confirmed the arrest and charge of a Prisons Officer who is attached to the Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre.
According to an initial report, on June 06, 2023, at approximately 11:14am, Prisons Officer I #5303, Michael Johnson, who has over three (3) years of service, was searched during an intelligence-led exercise, and he was found to be in possession of prohibited articles whilst on duty.
Officer Johnson was cautioned about his actions and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service was contacted. Officers from the Arima Police Station responded, secured all items of evidence and took Officer Johnson into police custody for further investigation.
On June 07, 2023, Officer Johnson was charged for “Possession of Prohibited Articles”. He appeared before an Arima Magistrate to answer said charge. He was placed on bail and the matter was adjourned.
Commissioner of Prisons (Ag), Mr. Deopersad Ramoutar has condemned the action of the Officer and by extension all officers who engage in illegal activities.
He lamented that their actions compromise the safety and security of the institution and their colleagues, as well as negate the good work officers are doing. He has reiterated his commitment to ensure that such persons are apprehended and removed from the environment.
Commissioner Ramoutar has commended the vigilance and alertness of persons involved in the apprehension of the officer and is extending his gratitude for the joint efforts of the agencies of the Ministry of National Security network.
The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service said it continues to address crime and criminality within the prisons.
