Police, Residents, Nab, Robbery, Suspect, In Belmont.

A 44-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravation, was denied bail Wednesday when he appeared before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate.

ANTHONY ASSING, of Fatman Lane, Prizgar Lands, Laventille, was remanded into custody until sentencing on September 27th.

According to a police report on September 19th, a man hired an Arima maxi-taxi driver to transport a church group from Carr Street, Belmont to Carenage.

The driver along with his girlfriend agreed and they drove to Carr Street, Belmont.

However, upon arriving at the location a man demanded that the driver hand over all of his valuables.

The driver, fearful for his life and that of his girlfriend, handed over his phone and a quantity of cash.

The driver’s girlfriend raised an alarm which alerted residents in the area who immediately gave chase and apprehended the assailant.

Meanwhile, officers of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, who were on mobile patrol in the area, observed the commotion and intercepted and arrested the man.

ASSING was subsequently taken to the Belmont Police Station and subsequently charged by Acting Woman Corporal Ashby of the Belmont Police Station Criminal Investigations Department.

Belmont Police wish to thank the residents of Carr Street, Belmont, for their intervention which led to the capture of the suspect.

According to the Belmont Police, they are noticing that citizens are answering to the call to not only see something and say something, but are now doing something as well.
