Police Association President: Unacceptable that officers will not receive backpay

President of the Police Social and Welfare Association ASP Gideon Dickson, is livid, following the announcement by the Finance Minister that police officers may not be paid backpay by Christmas.

During the Parliament sitting on Wednesday, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said he was “fairly confident” 30,000-plus public officers who accepted Government’s 4% wage offer before the budget presentation in October will receive their backpay by Christmas.

However, Imbert said that there may be challenges getting the police their anticipated backpay.

Dickson said this is unacceptable.

“This situation needs to be addressed immediately by all those responsible for backpay for police,” he slammed.

“Immediately! Listen, we cannot accept the position that officers are not going to be in receipt of their backpay come December 24.

“They need to fix that. Whatever they need to do it has to be done because officers have their families and their lives, and we signed off since February this year.

“Whatever they have to do, redeploy resources, bring in other resources, but officers have to get their money,” he added.
