56 illegal weapons were found were at the legal ports or entry in Trinidad and Tobago while 5,844 rounds of ammunition were discovered by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for the period January 2018 to April 2024.
For the same period 10 persons were arrested for the possession of illegal firearms while 29 were held for ammunition.
Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, provided the update to the Senate on Tuesday.
He said legal firearms have also been used to carry out illegal activity.
He said transit sheds which are authorised by the Comptroller of Customs have been found to be vulnerable and two have been shut down in the past and they continue to be closely monitored.
Hinds said persons who are paid to protect the people have been involved criminal activity.
