Opposition leader says law enforcement officers should get personal firearms

The Opposition Leader has issued a call for the government to “immediately act” to provide Firearm User Licenses (FULs) to law enforcement officers in this country.

In a release on Tuesday, Kamla Persad-Bissessar said it was not fair to ask officers to put their personal safety at risk, while on duty, only to leave them unprotected when they leave their workplaces.

The Opposition Leader said that the murders and constant death threats are having a traumatic effect on officers of the protective services and their families.

Persad-Bissessar alleged further that it was hypocritical that “some Ministers and members of their families are the holders of several legal guns, while law enforcement officers are not afforded the same means to protect themselves and their loved ones when off duty by this Government.”
