Opposition Leader claims Muslims are being treated unfairly

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is of the firm view that Muslims in the country and regionally are being treated unfairly.

Persad-Bissessar during her speech at the Iftar gathering at the Chaguanas Regional Corporation on Saturday said she plans to meet with Muslims to discuss a “dangerous increase in discrimination and persecutions of Muslims.”

Persad-Bissessar said Muslims are discriminated against, especially when it comes to accessing visas and their treatment at airports.

T&T is one of 66 countries with citizens, mostly women and children, detained in camps in Syria.

2013 to 2016, at least 130 T&T nationals travelled to ISIS-controlled territories.

“Some Muslims who had visas have been turned back from the airport after having their visas cancelled unknowingly to them.”

Persad-Bissessar plans to bring this to the attention of Parliament and embassies.
