One year old baby girl chopped to death during argument

A 15-month-old baby girl is dead after she was accidentally chopped by a 68-year-old male relative last night.

The victim has been identified as Sariah Williams.

From initial reports, at about 8:15 pm she was in the gallery of the family’s home in Taradale, Ste Madeleine when the 68-year-old got into an argument with other relatives in the house.

He went inside and came back out with a cutlass.

The man allegedly attacked a 50-year-old woman who was holding baby Sariah at the time – striking the toddler to the head.

The 50-year-old woman sustained wounds to her wrist.

The older man was subdued by other relatives and the 50-year-old and the toddler were both taken to the San Fernando General Hospital.

However, baby Sariah succumbed to her wounds at 10:23pm

She sustained a chop wound to the right side of her forehead and face, resulting in a fracture to the skull.

A post mortem is expected to take place, pending a COVID-19 test.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Police said the suspect has a history of violence, having been charged in the past for offences of wounding and malicious damage.

Officers of Homicide Region III and Ste Madeleine police also responded and investigations are continuing.
