Oil spill along Cedros coastline

Fisherfolk in Cedros are calling on the Environmental Management Authority and Institute of Marine Affairs for assistance, after they found their boats, nets and anchors covered with oil this morning.

The oil blanketed areas along the shoreline in Bonnase and Fullerton in Cedros, contaminating the boats and nets and preventing fishermen from going out to sea.

According to reports, the oil was first observed on the shoreline last evening but the source of it is not yet confirmed.

Former councillor Shankar Teelucksingh said several boats, nets and anchor rope were heavily soiled. He said that fishermen were angry, particularly since they got no compensation when the previous oil spills occurred.
