No Word On Fuel Rebate Could Result In Higher Fish Prices, Warns Opposition

The Opposition is claiming the national community can expect an increase in the price of fish.

Member of Parliament for Couva North, Ravi Ratiram, said this comes mainly as the government refuses to re-visit and revise the out-dated and inadequate fuel rebate paid to fisher folk.

In a media release on Monday, MP Ratiram said at present, the rebate has stood unchanged over the course of decades at 10 cents on diesel, 12 cents on gasoline and 75 cents on oil.

MP Ratiram claimed fishermen have had to bear five increases in fuel prices under this government.

MP Ratiram raised this point during the Standing Finance Committee’s deliberations following the 2022/2023 budget debate in the Parliament.
