On Wednesday January 20th 2021, doctors at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex successfully performed the first ever Complex Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (pacemaker) extraction in the Caribbean.
The very technical, high risk procedure was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, led by Head Cardiologist, Dr. Fareed Ali.
The specialist team also included doctors specialized in chest, vessel and general surgery along with radiologists and anaesthesiologists.
Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Regional Health Authority, Mr. Davlin Thomas was high in praises for the excellent work undertaken by team.
“This is a historical moment for us – not just here at this RHA, but regionally, and by extension on a global scale.
This is a testimony of our commitment to excellence and our resolute dedication to ensuring that we provide our citizens with the highest quality standard of healthcare that matches the best worldwide. We are proud of our medical team.
Medical Chief of Staff of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Dr. Joanne Paul in a media release issued this afternoon, echoed the sentiments of the Chief Executive Officer and also extended her congratulations to the team of specialist doctors for their excellence in service.
“Presently in Trinidad, only five (5) specialists are able to perform the implantation of this device, two (2) of which are based at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. As difficult as it maybe to insert, the procedure to remove this device poses an even greater challenge.
It has never been done in the Caribbean.
This is an awesome, monumental feat and it speaks volumes for the NCRHA as healthcare service provider in this country,” Dr. Paul indicated.
The success of a medical intervention of this nature, has positioned the North Central Regional Health Authority yet again as one of the front runners in pioneering healthcare procedures – a position that the Authority does not take lightly.
The North Central Regional Health Authority wishes to express special commendations to all members of staff for their unrelenting support and diligence as the Authority continue its thrust to deliver patient care that is so much better.
