MoWT: New camera system will reduce time at traffic lights and enhance safety for drivers

Works and Transport Minister, Rohan Sinanan, said the newly installed camera system would allow drivers to continue driving once there was no traffic on intersecting roads.

The cameras were recently installed along this country’s roadways with the aim of tackling traffic congestion and reducing the country’s crime.

Sinanan, who spoke with the media at the intersection of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway and Golden Grove Road in Piarco, revealed the workings and reasoning behind the installation of new 360-degree video detection cameras which are going to be placed along major traffic intersections across the country

Sinanan said: “These new cameras, which are above the ground, will be help to manage the traffic flows in this country. The cameras are 360 degrees so it can see traffic from all directions and can aid with the changing of the lights and the traffic signals can be synchronised.

He said that seven such systems have been installed at along the East-West Corridor between Diego Martin and Piarco, and one system installed near Gulf City in South Trinidad, and noted that each unit had an average cost of about $200,000.

He noted that the maintenance of the new system would be about 20 per cent of what the ministry had previously had for the below-ground system.

While the minister did not go into details about how the ministry was working with law enforcement or what access they would have, he said he believed that this system will aid with the safety of citizens of this country.
