MoH confirms 1st case of the BA.2 Omicron Variant Sub-lineage in TT

Trinidad and Tobago has recorded its first case of the BA.2 Omicron Variant Sub-lineage.

In a media release last evening, the Health Ministry reported that the case is a person with no history of recent travel and no known contact with recent travellers.

As a result of the positive Covid-19 result, the patient was isolated and will remain in isolation until the discharge criteria for persons with Covid-19 variants of concern are met.
Additionally, contacts of this positive case have been quarantined.

The case is still under epidemiological investigation.

The Ministry says BA.2 is one type of the Omicron Variant of Concern and is not considered to be a new variant.

According to a February 22nd 2022 statement by the WHO, it is closely monitoring the BA.2 lineage while studies are evaluating the risk of reinfection with BA.2

The BA.2 appears to be more transmissible, there is no data yet to suggest that it is more severe.
