Mattel debuts Barbie with Down Syndrome

Mattel has introduced its first Barbie with Down syndrome.

Mattel shared the big news in a statement this Tuesday saying it had worked with the National Down Syndrome Society in the United States to make the doll and ensure that it accurately represents a person with Down syndrome.

“The doll’s palms even include a single line, a characteristic often associated with those with Down’s syndrome,” The NDSS said it was purposeful with every design choice for the new Barbie doll which will be apart of the Fashionistas dolls collection.

“The new face sculpt features a rounder shape, smaller ears, and a flat nasal bridge, while the eyes are slightly slanted in an almond shape.

The doll’s puff sleeved dress pattern features butterflies and yellow and blue colors, which are symbols and colors associated with Down syndrome awareness.” In addition to that, “The doll’s puff sleeved dress pattern features butterflies and yellow and blue colors, which are symbols and colors associated with Down syndrome awareness,” NDSS noted in a press release.
