Liz Truss resigns as British PM after 45 days in office

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned after just 45 days in the job.

Her successor is set to be elected within a week.

Conservative Party MPs urged Ms Truss to go after her government was engulfed by political chaos.

Truss-o-nomics (the name given to her economic plans for Britain) was ditched after it sent the value of the British Pound spiralling downward forcing her to fire her Finance Minister and make a U-turn on her economic policies.

A key minister, former home secretary Suella Braverman, then quit and published a scathing resignation letter in which she admonished the PM and her mistakes.

This was followed by Conservative MPs rebelling in a chaotic parliamentary vote which is said to have served as a mini referendum on her leadership.

In a speech this morning, Ms Truss said: “I recognise that I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

She will remain as PM until a successor formally takes over as party leader and is appointed prime minister by King Charles III.

Ms Truss will become the shortest-serving PM in British history when she stands down.
