Letitia Wright gets heroes welcome to land of birth – Guyana

Guyanese-British actress Letitia Wright arrived in the land of her birth on Friday, January 27, 2023, and received a grand welcome on her arrival. The Black Panther Star and Guyanese by birth Letitia Wright returned to Guyana after 23 years. Letitia was born on October 31, 1993, in Georgetown. Her family moved from Guyana to London, England, when she was seven years old.

The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of Guyana, Oneidge Walrond and First Lady Arya Ali greeted Wright at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The Marvel’s Black Panther 2 – Wakanda Forever star, Letitia Wright, was treated to spectacular performances by the National Dance Company, steel pan music and drumming on Friday evening.

The Guyanese-born actress, who plays the lead role of “Shuri”- scientist and now Queen of Wakanda in the Black Panther movie franchise, captivated the hearts of fans across the globe, but especially in Guyana.

Letitia Wright, best known for her roles in the blockbuster Black Panther movies, will spend several days in the country. She is expected to meet with President Irfaan Ali and be presented with the keys to the City by the Georgetown Mayor during her stay.

The accomplished actress has never shied away from her Guyanese roots. Testament of that is the presence of the golden arrowhead in her Instagram bio for her 2.8 million followers to see. The 29-year-old, in a recent interview with a correspondent of Ebony Magazine online, stated, “I have lots of cousins in Guyana, you know, who are proud and that’s great, but this (Black Panther) has made people proud and I’m grateful for that it.”

Minister Walrond expressed her pride on behalf of the government and Guyanese, who are deeply inspired by the success of the daughter of the soil. Wright was emotional as she spoke to members of the media and others at the Airport, who were there to welcome her.

Notably, she expressed that she remains humble and is touched by the welcome she received. Wright left Guyana when she was seven years old and always had a passion for acting. Furthermore, she will be visiting several locations and attending other planned activities during her stay. Among her activities, she will give an inspirational talk to young actors in Guyana. She will also watch her film with a group of Guyanese.

The 29-year-old was invited by President Dr Irfaan Ali in a letter dated November 15, 2022, to Guyana. The Head of State penned, “I would like to extend an invitation to you to visit Guyana. The government of Guyana would be honoured to host you.”. He further stated, “I write to congratulate you on your resounding success. I am moved by an interview in which you mentioned the country of your birth and how much you wanted to make the people of Guyana proud. I thank you for the recognition you brought our country and the immense feelings of pride which your superb onscreen performances have evoked.”
