Improvements in TT students CSEC & CAPE exams encouraging says MoE

The Ministry of Education says the improved performance of T&T’s students in this year’s CSEC and CAPE exams is encouraging, with more students in 2023—some 67.7 percent—obtaining passing grades in CSEC compared with 62.72 percent in 2022.

“These results are testament to the resilience of our students, dedication of their teachers and support of their parents,” the Ministry stated in a release issued Friday.

According to the Ministry’s statement, in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) 2023, 58.57% of the students who wrote five or more CSEC subjects were successful in obtaining a minimum of five subjects—an increase from 2022’s 53.05%. Further, 51.51% of the students who attempted five or more subjects inclusive of Mathematics and English A were successful, compared to 43.66% of the students in 2022. 

The Ministry also notes that pass rates were greater in 26 subjects in 2023.

The Education Ministry reports that according to the CXC analysis for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), 96.08% of the written CAPE subjects entries achieved acceptable passes of Grades I-V compared to 94.34% in 2022.  In addition, 73.87% of students attained Grades I, II and III, an increase from 70.78% in 2022.

For CAPE 2023, 32 Unit I and 29 Unit II subjects were written.  The CXC analysis of students’ performance revealed:

-In 2023, 96.40% of written CAPE Unit I subject entries achieved acceptable passes of Grades I-V, compared to 94.78% of the subject entries in 2022.
-73.81% of subject entries attained Grades I, II and III, an increase from 70.11% in 2022.
-There was an increase in the quality of grades with 2.44% more Grade 1 passes bring achieved in 2023 over 2022.

“Performance in CAPE Unit I continues to be good, with 26 out of 32 subjects attaining a pass rate of 90% and above. Three subjects attained pass rates of 100% with 17 subjects registering improvements from 2022 to 2023,” the Ministry reports.

It also points out that performance in Cape Unit II was encouraging, with 25 out of 29 subjects attaining a pass rate of 90% and above. 

“In 2023, 95.47% of written CAPE Unit II subject entries achieved acceptable passes of Grades I-V compared with 2022, with 93.54% achieving acceptable passes,” the Ministry noted.  “Grades I, II and III were obtained by candidates in 73.99% of the subject entries written when compared with 72.01% in 2022.”

The Education Ministry also reports that six subjects had attainment rates of 100% in comparison to 3 subjects in 2022.  In addition, 20 subjects registered an improvement in pass rates in 2023, as compared with 15 subjects in 2022.
