Health Ministry dismisses “inflammatory” comments about racial bias

The Ministry of Health has described as “inflammatory”, statements made by activist Wendell Eversley concerning Dr Avinash Sawh and the allegations of racial bias on the part of Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh.

Dr Sawh was suspended for one week by the Medical Board over a race rant caught on camera, but Eversley pointed out that aformer medical intern Dr Dhelia Gabriel was fired by the Ministry over racist remarks.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry noted that medical interns fall under the purview of the Ministry of Health.

However, in relation to Dr Sawh, it said disciplinary matters concerning doctors in private practice falls under the remit of the Medical Board and not the Ministry of Health.

As such, the Ministry said any questions on the outcome of that inquiry should be put to the Medical Board.

It noted that the Ministry of Health lodged its complaint with the Medical Board when the matter first arose.

The Ministry added: “Therefore, it is rather unfortunate that these facts were not checked by Mr Eversley prior to his inflammatory remarks which the Ministry condemns, given its implications.”
