Head of Registered Nurses Assoc says improper hygiene practices could have contributed to death of babies

Head of the Registered Nurses association of Trinidad and Tobago Idi Stewart says that it is possible that the bacterial infections responsible for the babies’ deaths the NICU at Port of Spain General Hospital could have easily been spread from  medical staff to the babies or if the cots were too close together.

Speaking this morning on the Power Breakfast Show he said that while he does not have all of the information in the situation, it is possible that cross contamination could have contributed to the issue.

He also said if the doctors were not practicing proper hygiene this could also have a devastating effect on the spread of infection.

He disclosed that while a shortage of nursing staff could have been a factor what is more likely a bigger factor is the way the doctors who attended to the babies conduct their duties and whether they used proper hygiene in doing so.
