Government must intensify flood preparation efforts says MP Ameen

St. Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen says Government must intensify its flood preparation efforts.

In a media release, MP Ameen said with a wetter-than-usual start anticipated, it is critical that necessary infrastructure projects and emergency measures are expedited to protect vulnerable communities.

She sent a formal letter to Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport, inquiring about the status and completion timelines of the Bamboo and St. Joseph River drainage projects, as well as the installation of pumps and flood gates.

These projects are vital in mitigating flood risks for residents in these flood-prone areas.

“Given the increased flood potential this season, it is imperative that the Ministry of Works and Transport accelerates its efforts to complete these projects. The safety and well-being of our citizens depend on robust and timely flood mitigation measures.”

Furthermore, MP Ameen called upon the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) to implement comprehensive protective measures for residents of Bamboo and all other major courseways in the St. Augustine constituency, areas historically vulnerable to severe flooding.

“Proactive measures are essential to ensure the safety of these communities,” she said.
