A 29-year-old fire fighter was found dead in a holding cell at the Chaguanas Police Station on Saturday morning.
Anslem London, of Robinson Street, Montrose, Chaguanas, was arrested in Cunupia as a suspect in a case of wounding causing actual bodily harm.
He was placed in a cell at the station after participating in an identification parade, where he was positively identified.
He was expected to be charged and taken to court on Monday.
However, when officers went to check on him at 7am Saturday, he was found hanging by the neck from a belt tied to the bars of the cell.
