Fire destroys elderly couple’s Macoya home; wife nursing second-degree burns

A 66-year-old woman is today nursing second-degree burns to her body, following a fire that razed her family’s Macoya home on Wednesday.

Meena Dipsingh and her 86-year-old husband Cyril Sookdeo were at their Diamond Avenue, Venus Drive, Macoya Extension home around 9am when the fire began.

Reports state that Mr Sookdeo was having breakfast in the living room at the time, when he observed smoke coming from their son’s bedroom.

Upon checking, he realised the fire was out of control and rushed to save his wife, who is bed-ridden.

Neighbours contacted the authorities and Emergency Health Services arrived and took the elderly couple to the hospital for treatment.

Fire officials from the Tunapuna Fire Station responded to the report but were unable to save the structure.
A second house located on the eastern side of the couple’s home was also damaged.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Damage is estimated at $120,000
