Education Minister defends last minute school closure announcement

Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly is defending the decision to only notify the public this morning of the decision to close schools today.

The announcement was made around 7AM today.

This left some parents scrambling to either pick up their children from school or rushing to make alternative arrangements.

Minister Gadsby-Dolly told Power 102 Digital Power Breakfast Show however that closing schools is not an easy decision as it has ripple effects.

She explained that such an enormous decision could therefore only be made based on official information…which she only received this morning.

Minister Gadby-Dolly added that the situation will be monitored during the course of the day before a decision is made regarding school tomorrow.

Authorities will also keep an eye on the physical state of schools after five schools yesterday suffered damage as a result of the flooding.
