Debate on next CoP today; Will Erla Christopher get the votes?

Parliamentarians will be debating whether Erla Harewood-Christopher is the best choice to be this country’s next Commissioner of Police and first female to hold the position, when the House sits today.

Her nomination will take the form of a motion, which will be piloted by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.

If the name of a nominee sent to the Parliament is rejected in debate, the next nominee on the merit list is examined.

In this instance, the next candidate in line, will be recently retired DCP McDonald Jacob.
Third in line to the CoP’s chair is Snr Supt Anand Ramesar.

In the 2018 process, nominees Deodath Dulalchan, Harold Phillips and Stephen Williams were rejected before Gary Griffith was approved as CoP.

Today’s debate on Harewood-Christopher will involve a simple majority vote, which means it can be passed with Government votes alone.
