Calls again for police outside schools in hotspots after gunmen seen outside Malick Secondary

TTUTA s calling for regular police patrols near Malick Secondary School.

This follows a report that gunmen were seen in the hills above the school on Thursday.

Lum Kin said, “TTUTA was informed this morning (Friday) that persons brandishing what appeared to be high-powered rifles were observed around the compound of Malick Secondary School. It was further reported that there were fights outside of the school’s compound on Thursday, and it is alleged that persons involved in the fights called for back-up from persons that are known to them.”

He said, “The members of staff, as well as the students, are fearful for their lives at this point in time. These incidents have left our members psychologically affected.”

“TTUTA calls on the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to conduct regular patrols in the vicinity of the school’s compound and to even have static presence during the school day,” he added.

Lum Kin said he was also told that, on Wednesday, “what appeared to be gunshots were heard emanating outside Jerningham Government Primary School”, stressing TTUTA’s concern about the safety of its members and occupants of schools in “hotspot areas”.

Morvant police said while they received no such report on Thursday, their “patrol regime” remains in place as well as their close relationship with the school.

Senior Supt Mervyn Edwards, who heads the North Eastern Division, said the only report they received about Malick Secondary was that a schoolboy was robbed of $18 on Thursday afternoon.
