22,900 tests kits in stock with more on the way

Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh confirmed that there are 22,900 test kits currently in stock.

At a press conference on Saturday morning, Deyalsingh said the country uses three types of test kits- the BGI and Abbott kits and the Gene Xpert machine.

He confirmed that there are 20,200 BGI test kits in stock and an additional 10,000 kits will be sent by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

Deyalsingh confirmed that the kits are on rolling orders, which means that approximately 20,000 kits are received in the country each month.

In terms of the Abbott test kits, there are 1920 and it is expected that 36,384 kits will arrive in the country soon. These kits are also on rolling orders for approximately 20,000 each month.

The Gene Xpert machine, which Deyalsingh confirmed is used in Tobago, Sangre Grande and at the TPHL lab in St Clair, has 780 kits in stock.

Deyalsingh then provided an update on the Antigen rapid diagnostic tests which he said should arrive in the country by the end of October.
