T&T National Security Expert: Gun smugglers are “untouchable”

We are dealing with untouchables.

This is the sentiment of national security expert Garvin Heerah as he addressed the gun smuggling issue facing Trinidad and Tobago.

Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob and National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds both told Power 102 Digital’s Power Breakfast Show yesterday that the illegal smuggling of guns into the country is impacting and influencing the crime rate.

Mr Heerah agreed with this sentiment, however, he suggested that there are persons high up in the national security apparatus and in societal circles who are facilitating and benefitting from the country’s porous borders and the illegal importation of firearms.

Mr Heerah also addressed recent calls for the Defence Force to ramp up their presence in the fight against crime.

He explained that the military is already stretched thin and as a result he does not believe that is where the focus should lie.

He suggested an increased focus on uncovering the so called untouchables, which would then make a dent in the illegal gun trade.
