The Ministry of Health has identified six (6) new cases of the P1 COVID-19 variant (Brazilian Variant) in Trinidad and Tobago. This brings to 15 in total detected so far in the country.
The new cases of the variant were detected Nariva/Mayaro (1) – non-national, primary contact of another confirmed P1 variant case; St George West (5). They were all nationals. One case was the primary contact of another confirmed P1 variant case.
The ministry also said that all contact tracing and isolation procedures are in progress, and are being managed by the relevant County Medical Officer of Health with the aim of reducing the spread of this Variant of Concern. The minister of health earlier this week in the senate confirmed the first case of the Brazilian variant was in a Venezuelan National.
