Scrap Iron Dealers: Government’s Decision To Suspend Copper Exports Taking Toll On Industry

The local scrap iron dealers association is claiming government’s decision to shut down the export of copper is beginning to take its toll on the industry.

In August this year the government implemented a six-month ban on scrap iron and copper export.

It was introduced after an increase in thefts of state infrastructure at the Water and Sewage Authority, Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago, facilities.

Many were affected in the service they received due to the situation.

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association, Allan Ferguson, says international buyers, the shipping, truckers and brokers are affected by the decision.

Speaking at a news briefing on Monday, Mr Ferguson said most of the people in the sector are feeling the pressure because of the development.

Mr Ferguson said a number of workers from scrap iron yards are now out of jobs.
